Youth
Because of the Prophecy regarding Purple Dragons, Ignitus took Spyro's as the one egg he could safely carry out of the Swamp Temple on the Night of the Egg Raid. Spyro's egg was sent down the Silver River, and was found by a family of Dragonflies in the Golden Mushroom Swamp. The Dragonfly parents Flash and Nina were confused at first, but then decided to move the strange purple egg near the egg of their own, to protect it. That very night, thieves struck, taking both Spyro's and Sparx's eggs with them. After recovering both the eggs the next morning, Nina and Flash watched as their son hatched in what is now know as the Sparx Pond; by the afternoon, Sparx had learned to crawl, and they watched as their son crawled along the Dragon egg, talking to the little creature still inside of it. At dusk, Spyro coincidentally hatched that same day, and Sparx was overjoyed to meet his new playmate; it was then when Flash and Nina decided to raise Spyro as family along with their son Sparx. Spyro later rescued young Sparx from being eaten when he was caught by a bird.
A few years later, Spyro was enrolled (along with his brother Sparx) in a local Dragonfly school. Noticing that he still had difficulty staying airborne long after all the other students had already learned to fly, young imago Dragonflies picked on Spyro, and one especially stern teacher (who was later expelled) had tried to force Spyro to fly by using a wing-exercising machine. When Nina and Flash found out about all the bullying both Spyro and Sparx had suffered, they pulled both their sons out of school, deciding instead on homeschooling. Young Spyro was thus protected from the dangers of the outside world, never allowed to venture too far out into the Swamp. Until meeting another Dragon (Ignitus) for the first time at the age of twelve, Spyro believed he was a Dragonfly. For most of this time he did not use any elements, and only used his wings for gliding, shown by the surprise of his brother Sparx when he demonstrated these abilities.
Teen Years and Depression
When Spyro learned the truth of his foreign heritage, he set off into the world beyond his home, grimly walking the length of the swamp alone until Sparx found him. In spite of his habit of putting himself down, he still has the will to do what he felt was right, evident by his actions throughout his life, such as rescuing Cynder from the Convexus Portal upon its unlocking. However, without regular support from his family and friends, he would most likely succumb to Darkness.
Wing Shield
A Dragon’s first defense maneuver, Spyro likely learned this move instinctively as a Dragonling. He has continued using it throughout his life.
Melée
Claw-swipe, tail-whip, and horn-jab are a Dragon’s first offense moves. They are simple on their own, but Spyro used these and their upgraded forms (taught by Ignitus and other Dragons) to defeat many enemies.
Fire
Spyro first breathed Fire while upset at Sparx’ imprisonment in a lantern. He studied with Ignitus to learn more abilities, such as fireballs and a Fire fury. After defeating Cynder with his Æther fury, Spyro temporarily lost his breath abilities. Spyro regained his Fire breath after the Chronicler helped him reawaken it. After defeating Malefor, Spyro temporarily lost all his elemental breaths besides Fire (which is present, but weakened).
Flight
Since he was pressured early-on to fly—by Dragonflies back when he was in public school—Spyro didn’t fly proper till age 12, when Ignitus helped him overcome his fear of flight-failure. But flight is exhausting, and Spyro crashed during his landing in Dante’s Freezer. Since then, he has only flown when necessary. After being in a Time Crystal for three years, he missed the sensation of flight, and would fly low to the ground, but still didn’t dare to fly much higher than that, unless truly needed. After his defeat of Malefor, Spyro’s magic abilities have been exhausted, including flight.
Electricity
Spyro first breathed Electricity while in Dante’s Freezer. He studied with Volteer to learn more abilities, such as Electric orbs and an Electric fury. After defeating Cynder with his Æther fury, Spyro temporarily lost his breath abilities. Spyro regained his Electricity breath after the Chronicler helped him reawaken it. After defeating Malefor, Spyro temporarily lost all his elemental breaths besides Fire.
Ice
Spyro first breathed Ice when he was afraid that Kane would plummet off the edge of a waterfall in Tall Plains. He studied with Cyril to learn more abilities, such as snowballs and an Ice fury. After defeating Cynder with his Æther fury, Spyro temporarily lost his breath abilities. Spyro regained his Ice breath after the Chronicler helped him reawaken it. Unfortunately, Spyro still hasn’t learned to swim, and would’ve drowned if he hadn’t been rescued by the turtle leviathan. After defeating Malefor, Spyro temporarily lost all his elemental breaths besides Fire.
Earth
Spyro first breathed Earth while trapped under a large bell. He studied with Terrador to learn more abilities, such as Earth flails and an Earth fury. After defeating Cynder with his Æther fury, Spyro temporarily lost his breath abilities. Spyro regained his Earth breath after the Chronicler helped him reawaken it. After defeating Malefor, Spyro temporarily lost all his elemental breaths besides Fire.
Æther
Spyro first breathed Æther in his second fight against Cynder. After defeating Cynder with his Æther fury, Spyro temporarily lost his breath abilities. Spyro regained his Æther breath after fighting Gaul the Ape King. After defeating Malefor, Spyro temporarily lost all his elemental breaths besides Fire.
Time
Spyro first manipulated Time after studying with the Chronicler. Spyro later performed a Time Fury and created an amber Time Crystal which froze himself, Sparx, and Cynder within the Mountain of Malefor. After being freed from the crystal, he lost his Time-manipulation abilities. It is currently unknown whether Dragon Time will return to Spyro.
Spyro is a Purple Dragon known as a hero. His perseverance through disaster and resolute frame of mind serve this opinion well. As a Purple Dragon, he is capable of several different elemental talents, including Fire, Electricity, Ice, and Earth, but most notably Æther and Time. He is probably most famous for reforming the earth after Malefor negatively initiated the Great Cleansing.
Parentage
Spyro's parentage is currently unknown.
Relationship with Cynder
When Spyro encountered the magically corrupted Cynder for the first time, he was frightened, as many were. But he also caught a glimpse of something familiar in her eyes: sorrow. His concern for her was evident when Spyro, after speaking with Ignitus, had inadvertently cleansed her of her Darkness and saw her in her true form: rather than let her unconscious body enter the Convexity-Stygian Orcus portal, he risked being consumed himself in order to save her. Ignitus praised Spyro for Cynder's return to the temple, making both Spyro and Cynder blush.
His worst fear at the time being that she would be lost to Darkness again, Spyro was also greatly distressed by the Chronicler’s description of Cynder’s future reunion with Malefor, and her return to Darkness, which resulted in him actively seeking a way of saving her soul. “She was never given a choice,” he said. Gaul commented on this, referring to Spyro’s “miserable amity for Cynder”.
When she was again under Malefor’s influence, asking why he wouldn’t fight back, Spyro answered, “Because you’ve left me nothing to fight for.” Apparently this was enough to purge Cynder of the Darkness of that moment.
He commonly criticizes himself for things beyond his control, and Cynder is one of the many to tell him to not blame himself. Although she personally hated being chained to Spyro via the Snake Collars, she chose to stay with him through the reformation he initiated, whispering, “I love you.”
