Æther
Atmosphere and the spirits of all
~Ancient Elemental Poem on the Elements in Nature
Overview
Æther (alternately spelled Aether), also sometimes called Magic*(see note below), is one of the nine elements which make up Spyro’s world. It is found in the spirits of all, and used by Purple Dragons, wizards, and occasionally some other creatures. Purple Dragons are Æther bioindicators. The color used to represent Æther is violet purple, or else fuchsia. Æther is the embodiment of love and hope. Purple Dragons can only wield Æther after mastering four other elements first. Some Æther-wielding creatures can also use Time as a secondary elemental ability. The Dark form of Æther has no common name besides Darkness or Dark Æther, but is sometimes called Nether, or Negative Æther. Æther does not have a complementing opposite since it encompasses all other elements.
*Because Æther encompasses all other elements, it is sometimes called by the name Magic, especially by those living in the Skyland region. See Magic for more information on all magic in general.
Interplay With the Other Elements
Even the faintest flicker of light brings out hope.
~Skylanders: Ring of Heroes
Because Æther contains all other elements, it has no weaknesses, beyond itself: many Æther-wielders have a greater inclination for Dark corruption than those of other elements. Dark Æther is weak to Light Æther, while Light Æther has no weaknesses. Light always triumphs over the Darkness—those believing otherwise are lying to themselves.
Terminology
Ætherekinesis—external manipulation of Æther.
Ætheregenesis—the creation of Æther from within; the ability to make Æther.
Ætheregenetic—referring to the ability to create Æther.
Ætherevomous—Æther-spewing; the quality of being able to throw out Æther.
The Æthercrest
The shape of the Æthercrest in script is representative of the victory of Light over Darkness: the larger half curves upward and to the right, symbolic of Goodness conquering all Evil. Depending on the context, a depiction of the Æthercrest flipped backwards, sideways, or upside-down can either be part of a particular design's symmetry, or can symbolize Dark Æther, or the abandoning of Æther's true nature.
