There are four genres overall within western music of the past few centuries, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern. Baroque was formerly also called Classical, Ragtime (Ragged-time) is a type of Jazz, and I group Impressionist and Jazz in with Modern and Contemporary. All of these styles where once "contemporary" music.
